I work as a Graduate Aide at the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) located at the University of Illinois at Chicago. As one of my assignments, I had the chance to work on wayfinding signage for the different laboratory rooms throughout the building, which tend to wind around hallways and can cause confusion for those visiting the EVL for the first time. To remedy this, I chose to implement three different markers with multiple cutouts of each spaceship “flying” to each location. The EVL is known for its revolutionary computer graphics work for the original Star Wars movie, so the environment and culture is incredibly enthusiastic about science fiction and space travel. Because of that, I chose to use space-themed wayfinding signage to offer a prelude to the magic that exists within the walls of the lab. This was one of my favorite assignments and I was so excited to implement a fun, quirky solution consistent with the EVL culture.
